Why you are here....

Since I've suffered with migraines for over 30 yrs, I thought I'd try chiropractic therapy and chonicle my progress. I hope it gives someone else an solution whether this treatment is right for you. Gives a whole different meaning to "step on a crack, break your mother's back".

one hour relief!

I've settled into the process of getting an adjustment (see, I didn't say 'getting cracked') now only once a week. I was trying to go on Wed evenings after work, but my work schedule just changed to being out at 6:30pm and 'the boys' are only open until 6pm. AND my busiest time is between 3pm-6:30pm, and they are only open in the afternoon from 3pm-6pm. Oh well, I'll have to figure a time in the morning (they are open 9am-11am)... go figure.

Anyway, after missing a time for last week, and being SUPER busy at work, my hands and back was really shot!! I needed a new set of hands (I work in the shipping dept (alone- I run it, AND help in the finishing dept. -I run that too!). Of course, crocheting hats for charity doesn't help the 'hand' issue.

I decided I needed to see them. This week. no excuses. I planned to take a half hour off (or more) even if it meant taking a lunch at 10:30-11am!! Let me tell you... after seeing them yesterday (and thank God I tell them when and where I'm hurting), Dr S is a magician! I realized at about 12:30pm... I had new hands on me. in fact, so much that I didn't want to use them because I didn't want to screw up what they had done!

relief.....(I'm a believer)

Disappointed

After meeting with Dr V privately and talking with him about my daughter's financial situation last week, he insisted I have her speak with him... words he used were "financial hardship" and "we can push the finances aside".

After sitting through an entire hour and a half 'dr's report', the finances were 'handed off' to E.
and she told my daughter she needed 24 sessions and it would cost her over $1000!!! When I told her about the conversation I had with Dr V and what he said, she was VERY surprised. Even stunned! She would have to check with him and get back to us.

I hope to have a conversation with Dr V about this next week.

Oh, and I WAS supposed to have my final x-ray and scan (after my initial 48 sessions). It didn't happen and I haven't made an appt. yet, but we'll see what they say about continuing on a maintenance scedule and what the cost will be.

Well, I'll be....

It started out a sucky day. And REAL early! I woke up at 3:17-ish AM, with a headache. Dull, but there.

I got out of bed as quietly as I could, so not to wake up Lee, used the bathroom, took one Excedrin Migraine, drank a full glass of water and sucked on an icecube (it helps fight nausea) as I walked up the stairs to bed. I didn't fall asleep (I HATE that) and realized it was now 4:24am ... but must have fallen back to sleep, because I woke up and it was 7:55. I am usually at work at 8-8:30am. I called work to let them know I would be in late, hoping to get rid of my migraine. I wasn't at the stage of throwing up (I usually am at that stage with my migraines), but I felt like it might happen.

I came downstairs and made a cup of tea... had a small bowl of cereal with milk (it stayed down. That's a good sign). I laid down for a little while, watching the weather/news station (with the volume on #6-low), putting pressure on different areas of my head/face. This is my usual remedy, not that it WORKS every time. I finally shut off the tv, knowing it was gonna rain most all day and tried to sleep on the couch. Didn't work.

As I lay there, I remembered something that Dr. V said to me the last time I went in after having a violent migraine (Ash Wednesday 2011).
"Why didn't you call us?"
My response was, "How can I come in to see you guys, when I'm puking! I certainly can't drive and throw up at the same time and be safe!!"
"I would have come to you..."
10am:
Okay, that's what they say, huh? Then I'm calling (I usually get sick if I have to speak, but I wasn't at that stage yet, so I made the phone call to their office). They said to come in early or they are open 3pm-6pm later. I said I was coming in NOW. "ok!" They aren't so far from the house, so I was there in less than 5 mins.

Dr S worked on me, after hearing how I was feeling. He adjusted me back, used a device (hand-held) to trigger some pounding into my back muscles, then had me get up into a chair, took my neck temp on each side (I was 2 degrees off) and adjusted my neck. He sent me off with his usual request to "drink lots of water today" (I do). Off to work I decided to go, since I was already out of the house. (If I get sick at work I can always come home).
While speaking to my immediate boss (and the person who referred me to this office), I realized in the middle of a sentence... "I don't have a headache anymore!..."

How wonderful....(am I really becoming a 'believer'?)

Miracle in the works....

Okay, I'm not sure how this will work or IF this will work, but I'm watching this with my mouth WIDE OPEN and a teary face...

Let me backtrack.
There was a talk at the chiropractic office (these happen regularly and are for free, bring a guest, whatever...), entitled "How to Live to be 101" (they changed it to read 120!).My boss Carol and I went (she also goes to get adjustments there and at the end, they give you a sheet of paper asking you to give a referral. I always think of the same person, but never put her name down. Never. Why, you ask? Because I know how hard it was for ME to afford this route. This young person struggles to pay the three bills she has, car payment, car ins and cell phone. She is on assistance (food stamps & unemployment) and sometimes gets phone calls regarding her car payment (will it get repo-ed?). She needs those three bills paid, as she has a 5 yr old that needs to get to school (not on our school route by the house). She also has numerous phsical ailments and is depressed (wouldn't you be in her shoes?).

I mentioned that I couldn't recommend the person I know who would benefit the most from this and Dr V asked about her. When I explained her situation, he said two words. "Financial Hardship".

He said if she'd be willing to talk to him, he'd like to see if they can help, "pushing finances aside". Really?
I started to cry... "if you could do something for her..."

Well, she agreed to go and talk to them, because SHE'S tired of being on medications that don't seem to help and the threat of surgery for one thing or another. She had an exray and scan and will see them today to see how it looks. ...(please God, help them help her)...

Chiropractic Believer?

Had my adjustment today and I must say, that I'm not suffering with migraines like I used to. I've had one since Feb 28th (that was typically a vomiting one), and other than that, I've had a few 'normal' headaches-- no nausea. And an excedrin worked. (That would rarely work if I was nauseous).

It's well known by Dr V that I'm a skeptic (or at least I was), so he raised the question, "Are you becoming a chiropractic believer?".... shhhh. Don't say it out loud....

Spooky.....

Okay.....
How can they tell something is different?

I went in for my usual adjustment on Friday and they said "What's going on?"... Now, that isn't normally usual except that I had just gone to the doctor's office the day before and she put me on antibiotics for a possible bronchitis. I'd taken two pills the day before and one Friday morning. (Now, remember, my chiropractors are totally against any drugs in your system. They consider it toxic. Your body should heal itself.) I wasn't sure he was referring to my being on drugs until he said something else.

While he was moving my back, my hips and then to my neck, he rechecked something... I'm not sure what, but he said to me afterwards, "you're not holding your adjustments from the last time...hmm.... We'll do a scan on you on Monday anyway".

Is it spooky that he can tell something is different by my 'body', without knowing that I'm on drugs for something else? Not sure, but it creeps me out in a fascinated way.

Continued progress

I've decided not to post after each and every session, as I'm going three days a week now, instead of four. They (both doctors) seem to do most of the same adjustments (sometimes eliminating one adjustment or another).

The one thing I've noticed is that while we've had a few 'storms' come through the area, I haven't had the usual 'low pressure migraine' that preceeds the storms. I have had one really wicked migraine a few weeks ago on a Wed night. So bad, that I had to call my daughter (I was babysitting at the time) home from her 'date' as my grandson (age 5) was 'taking care of me' and getting his own drinks/food from the kitchen while I was vomiting!! NOT!

When I mentioned this to Dr V, he said I should have called him and he'd have come to the house. Not sure I want anyone here when I'm puking... sorry. But he said I could have called the next day and he'd have seen me right away! Good to know.

I also had a day of going up and down a 15' ladder to hang 55 quilts at our church (Project Linus quilt-a-thon) and my back was killing me. Dr S said next time call their cell phones and they'd have seen me immediately. That's also nice to know.

I'm at 24 visits.

13th Adjustment-Rescan... is it just a scam?

Well, had a interesting day yesterday... Had a rescan (seems like I'm healing), went to see Carol at work to show her my scan (comparison), but then she looked up on the computer about Maximized Living (which is what our chirpractor is affiliated with) and she found a web site that was titled Maximized Living scam... and it told about EXACTLY what we were put through with this chirporactor. Now, I'm not sure what to think. If I'd seen this article before I went, I wouldn't have gone and probably tried to streer anyone away from this place.

In the meantime, I went to a museum with my grandson, for a few hours, then came home to a horrific migraine!!!! Puking ALL afternoon, so badly that I had to call Julie on the phone and ask her to change her plans to spend the evening with her beau (he just came home from FL for work, and they were planning to spend the evening together- it was his birthday). Sorry Julie, but when a 5 yr old is putting a blanket over me and getting his own yogurt out of the frig for dinner, I'm not okay with that. Plus the fact that I couldn't even THINK of food to make him supper.

12th Adjustment

Today was a good day although I think Dr V thought I was uptight about something, because my shoulders were really tight. He spent some extra time loosening up my muscles along with my regular adjustments.

I have a re-scan tomorrow, so I'm anxious to see what that shows.

Two Adjustments Plus...

I've had two adjustments since my last post and things are changing..., but not sure how.

I woke up Sat feeling fine, but the day was gonna be busy for me. I wanted to take my grandson to the Maple Festival in a nearby town. I wanted to take him to a sugarhouse (we called them a Sap House when I was helping up in VT at the Jamieson's farm) so he could see that maple syrup doesn't come from a grocery store shelf. We had a map printed out from the online site, so we knew a few we could go to.

Anyhow, after not really having a decent breakfast (and I usually do), we headed out. It was a chilly and breezy day, and after a hour or so of walking around and seeing the sights, we grabbed a quick cheeseburger (me) and hotdog for him from the food tents. That was really all I ate, and though we didn't stay long (maybe two hrs or so), I was exhausted from the wind and the walk (and tired of all the people). I came home and took a nap (I had a benefit for my dying cousin, Mike). I felt good, but just wanted to sleep.

Yesterday was the second adjustment and I just felt a 'pull' in the left side of my neck (but then I usually do) with the next adjustment. I think the way to describe it is that the glands feel fuller (congested) along the left side of my neck. My ear was aching on that side too, enough that I put wadded up kleenix in my ear on Sunday (when in church). I feel like whatever headache I had on Thursday, was a normal headache (I can't tell you that I can remember the last time I had a regular headache vs. a migraine. Huh!...

oh yeah. The Plus. I went to a 'talk' at the chirpractor's office on Nutrition and Maximized Living Doctors. Very informative and although it was long (almost 2 hrs), I found Dr V talked fast and a lot. I did have a few questions that I would have asked him, if he stayed around, but he was back in his office across the hall (I did get one or two questions in before he left). I did take a test for my alkaline/acid test and I was perfectly aligned at 7.25.

Hiccup- Migraine

Well, what does this say...? I woke up with a sinus headache. Not a migraine... at least not at first. My sinuses were packed and the weird thing was, I had the pain in the eye, face and back of the neck, but this time it was on the right side of my head. Usually Always has been on the left.

I had plans today and don't want to reschedule, so I'm taking some non-aspirin sinus stuff (daytime) and then I thought I'd take one Excedrin migraine just in case. I tried eating some cereal, then went back to bed (since I didn't have an adjustment). I did have to meet Cricket (she's coming from out of state) at lunch -- oh God, who wants to think of food--, so I couldn't afford to 'let it ride'.

I ate some pasta, plain, just to put something in my stomach (got woken up by the phone) at about 10:30am, won't see Cricket until 1pm. Went upstairs to try and sew (see if that would put me in a 'normal' mode), then got a call that Cricket was in town!!! It's noon! Crap, now I have to finish the three seams I was working on, jump in the shower, throw on clothes, and drive to the restaurant.

The headache DID go away, but I'm not sure if this debunks the chiropractic or not.

I did get an article from my niece regarding finding the RIGHT chiropractor. If I go by this article, I'm going to the wrong ones. I may not continue with 'maintenance', but I'll see what they say.

9th Adjustment

Well, this morning I went in for my adjustment in a different frame of mind. I'd had a few harsh words (many) with my adult daughter this morning before she took her son to school. It was testy and nothing much seemed to get resolved. So I was more tense than usual.

However, ... that being said, I must admit the time I spent in the office was relaxing. Of course, not having anyone there (although two people were there by the time I was done- one must have been new, because when I got up from the table, she said "That's it??") may have made it relaxed.

Dr V changed his routine this morning. while on my stomach, I got three cracks in the back (central and upper), and he did the "lift and release" with the bottom end of the table (under my hips). I noticed this time (and I'm trying to notice exactly what he's doing), his hands were on my backside and he pushed down to make the table drop. (My boss Carol, also going to him, said she watched him and didn't think he had his hands on the patient when the table dropped.) I didn't get a wrench of the hips while on my side this time, either. When I rolled to my back, he adjusted my neck (face to the right shoulder, but relaxed), three times. Usually, I think it's once or twice. It felt a little tender, but that went away by the time I got home (3mins).

He did mention that I'm getting close to having a consultation (which means I'll be filling out some papers that will probably tell him how I'm feeling since I've been going) soon. That should be interesting. I haven't had a migraine since starting, but we'll see how it goes. (I'm still not sure it's the normal range of my migraine frequency, or if it's working. I have never been a sheep that follows the herd, so I'm not blindly following the path that 'it's a miracle', yet. I'm very optomistic, so we'll see.

I did bring my blood work on my cholesterol, but forgot to give it to him. Next time. (He just was curious to my numbers).

7th & 8th Adjustment

Today it's easier to do the last two sessions together (blogging anyway).
Session 7 was actually done with Dr S (1st time) and I've discovered, I like his method of cracking... a LOT! He's a little gentler, and takes his time with you. He explains things differently from Dr V, but also gives me more feedback ("Your bones move easily") and that makes me feel comfortable to ask things.
I had no achiness (or not enough to notice), but in all honesty I had a really busy day planned. I had a charity event I was putting on and needed to be at my top shape (I've cancelled before because I've had a migraine). I had all this amount of paperwork to do, but realized in the middle of eating lunch (I was at the church-where the event was to take place), that someone dropped off some donations, that I HAD to address right then. Bags and bags of donations! I had to go through them, so I could move them out of the way and have space for the event. I had to stand for the sorting process (it was a little hard on the back), and if I sat, the chair was comfortable, but low so my arms/elbows were above my heart! VERY UNcomfortable!! So after hours of sorting, I decided to go home, take an aleve and take a nap (for just an hour). I wasn't feeling great, but couldn't afford a headache since I was running the event. (sorry guys)

Today's adjustment was with Dr V and he did the usual back adjustments (manually), but did three of them (central and upper). I turned on my side and he did the back (lower) adjustment, then proceeded to crack the left side of my neck (my head turned to the right shoulder). It seems like it's always achy, but eventually  goes away. I have to remember to drink, drink, drink.
I also signed up to go to a nutrition class (1 hr) on Monday night 6pm-7pm. It's one of the perq's of going to this office. They are very much into education for their patients.

6th adjustment

Well, today was interesting.... I had a slight achiness in my lower back when I walked in. Dr V found a spot in my middle of my back that he adjusted, and also lifted up the section of the table and dropped it a few times. I rolled on my side and he did the usual cracking there...(lay on my right side, lower leg straight, upper leg bent slightly-of which he tends to lean against-, and pulls my right arm "up" so I'm leaning more on my upper right shoulder than on my side or my back). At this point, he twists/pushes down on my left hip. On my back, he took my temp on both sides of my neck and popped my head/neck to the right. None of this hurts, just sounds hurtful. (Think of it as cracking your knuckles). When I left, my lower back wasn't hurting and ... although my upper shoulder usually feels tender, today I didn't feel the usual soreness.

What I'm noticing now is what my body is saying to me. No, I'm not getting crazy (no more than usual), but I'm 'hearing' it better. I did feel twinges for several seconds/minutes at times today, but it really can't be counted on from the session, because Lee (hubby) & I took a day trip to Brattleboro, VT. I drove and it's a long time to be in the car in one position, so the achiness taht I felt after at times, was more from a cramped position of driving, and not stretching as often as I'd have liked. I'll see how it feels over the weekend.

One patient that was there today (getting an adjustment) was a police officer, Bernie (?)... I thought it was interesting that Dr V could 'feel' his spine through his Kevlar vest (he was in uniform). When I mentioned that it was 'amazing' that he could feel through the vest, Bernie said "They ARE amazing!". Good testimony, but I know I still need to see it for myself.

One thing that's occurring to me.... Tomorrow, we are supposed to get rain, all the way into Sunday. On a normal basis, I'd get a migraine from the air pressure of a storm approaching. That should be happening today. But, no migraine. Nothing. That's good. Coincidence? Does it happen every storm? No, so I'm taking it in and processing it ,such as it is. That's all. It's like I'm an observer. That's a good thing....

Another thing... I wish Dr V (or Dr S, when I have him) would spend more than 5 minutes (sometimes less) for our adjustment sessions. I'm paying (technically) $50 per session, so don't you think they should give me my $50 worth? That would mean these two doctors make over $500 per hour!!  I think I should at least get treated for 15 mins. My medical doctor doesn't even make that much money per hour for what he's seeing me for. This is probably the only thing I'm disturbed about. Someone should explain how that could be....

4th & 5th adjustments

Because my adjustment yesterday was at 3pm AND my session this morning was at 9:30am, I thought I'd combine the two sessions posting.

As much as I feel tighter on the left side of my neck/shoulder when I get there, I seem to have some relief when I leave (even if it's tender when I leave). Today I think he really felt the tension in the left side (shoulder) because he used a tool that 'snaps' a post against your body (looks like a very fat ballpoint pen-- picture the action of a needle for a diabetic being shot into their finger. This is the ACTION, not using a 'needle', per se). He 'popped' my left shoulder (I'm sure to shock the muscle into releasing the knot) several times today. I told him I felt a tightness in the left side of my neck and shoulder (could it be a sinus infection leading into the ear canal? That's my thought). He recommended that I sleep on my back (I'm not sure I could do that for very long).  And drink lots of water.... I'm doing that.

How do I feel?: better. The tightness in my shoulder is lessened. AND I thought this was just a menopause thing... but I 'think' I have less gas. Don't laugh. I NEVER used to have gas, but once I went through menopause, all I seem to do is fart exoflate. Not so much the last few days. (He must be working on my parts that affect the gastric areas...)

3rd adjustment

I've set my schedule up for M,W,F at 9:30am and Tues at 3pm. Yesterday was the 3rd adjustment and most of what I've seen Dr V do is, a few cracks in the center of my back, a neck wrench or two, then I roll over on the right side (actually, I feel as though I''m more on the upper back, then my hips rolled towards my right side), top knee bent, then he puts his weight on the back of my hip and presses down. I never really 'feel' this crack much. On my back, he does my neck, both sides (I always feel as though the pull on the left muscles in the neck is the tightest. I'm gonna ask him about that today). Takes my neck artery temp, and I'm done. Not back for getting paid $50 for that. I should time how long I'm actually there.

Feelings after: I feel a little sore on the left half of my neck, and it's bearable, just takes a few hours to go away.

Posting schedules

I thought I'd let you know I'm gonna post everyday that I get an adjustment, or attend a workshop/seminar at the chiropractor's office.

Today, laying face down, Dr V cracked my center spine, and 'wrenched' my neck on each side, but the wrench to the left (direction my chin is going in) was a little tighter than the right. It was very tender after he did it, but it seemed to calm down as he asked me to stay there  for a while (on my back) afterwards. After the initial three cracks (on my back), he had me roll on my right side and bend my upper leg and cracked my hip. Then onto my back and he uplled my neck, then took my temp on each side of my neck with a temp scanner. Since the temp was really off before the cracking began, he said it calmed down after resting for a while. Must be healing.

This is an improvement from the first adjustment, since I got a headache from the first one.

A New Beginning...(I hope)

Today was my first (actually second) trip to get my back adjusted at the chiropractor's office. And I feel fine...

Okay, maybe it's better to tell you some history of how I got to his office (...and no, I'm not giving directions, unless I'm asked). I work with a woman who suffers from fibromyalgia and was in such pain, she was almost in tears at work. She has found such relief and benefits from this particular office, that when they had a 'free x-ray and exam' around Valentine's day, she thought of me (with my migraines). I went for the free stuff, but being a usual skeptic, I went with the thought of 'just checking them out'.

My exam showed some severe damage to the spine in the upper neck area, and some of my vertebre at the top of my spine was 'twisted'. (Boy, now THAT's the first time I've ever been called 'twisted'! Although I'm sure, not the last...) The doctor, (which I'll refer to as Dr V in the future) said he can see the area that is affecting my headaches and thinks that they should be able to help (well, duh, isn't that what he should say to sell me on their services??) I even have two  fused vertebres in the neck area. My hips are out of alignment which he said makes one leg longer than the other, although I wouldn't notice it walking (just shows up that way on the x-ray). Do you think if I'd taken my sneakers off before the x-ray- I was standing up for it- that my hips would have been even? I think maybe (here is the skeptic in me again).

Since we have no medical insurance, (my hubby has switched jobs and isn't up for ins for 90 days) and he's not heard great things from the other guys in the shop-auto body-regarding the insurance they provide. This probably means I'll have to check about getting it with my company-which doesn't cover the costs of this treatment.

So... I figured out if I pay, for example, $130 a wk for medical ins for us, I'm paying about $520 a month-just for insurance that wouldn't cover this. Add the cost of this treatment ($498 month), and the cost of having insurance, and I'm paying out over $1000 a month to get chiropractic therapy.

Without insurance, this treatment (48 sessions) will cost me $2392 vs $2990 (I'm saving $598- 20% discount by paying it all at once), which equals out to $49.83 a session. If I'm going 4 days a week, to start, that's about $200 per wk. Being on layoff, IF I took the medical ins. with MY company, I would have to come up with twice the cost ($1040 a month) and pay it all at once for two months ($2080). And that STILL wouldn't cover treatment, although if I get in an accident, I'm up shit's creek for any other medical care!! Oh, well, that's how I'm justifying this journey.

Let's just say I'm doing this with a lot of prayer! I'm hoping the migraines will be less frequent and less intense. IF THIS WORKS, I'll shout their names all over the place (and yes, I realize that chiropracty doesn't work on everyone). Let's hope I 'snap out of it' soon.
